Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are routine activities that people perform everyday without needing assistance. There are six basic ADLs: eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (walking) and continence. An individual’s ability to perform ADLs is important in order to determine what type of long term care and coverage the individual needs. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) are the skills necessary to live independently, such as the ability to use a telephone, shop for groceries, handle finances, perform housekeeping tasks, prepare meals, and take medications.
